Xi Jinping Calls for Boost in PLA Rocket Force Capabilities Amid Rising Global Tensions
On October 19, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Rocket Force to strengthen its "deterrence and combat capabilities" during an inspection of a Rocket Force brigade. Xi emphasized the need for modernization, focusing on advanced missile systems and adapting to modern warfare, as China faces growing tensions, particularly with the U.S. and in the Indo-Pacific region.
The PLA Rocket Force, which manages China's conventional and nuclear missile arsenal, is critical to the country's defense strategy. Xi’s call for combat readiness follows a recent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test, the first in over four decades, underscoring China’s strategic military strength.
Xi also highlighted the importance of loyalty to the Communist Party amid ongoing military corruption issues. As tensions over Taiwan and the South China Sea grow, the Rocket Force is expected to play a key role in China’s national defense and global military posture, particularly as a counter to U.S. aircraft carriers.
